…and we’re back?!?!?

Posted: June 18, 2014 by JVK in Uncategorized

after a long hiatus i felt like writing again.  and update on life stats…

I turned 30 in October, like WOAH!

I’m no longer playing Rugby, just running, yoga, and the usual gym routines to stay fit.

I got married in March in Jamaica!  woohooo… I ran a Half Marathon with one of my bridesmaids the weekend before which was awesome.  I also ran the morning of the wedding on the beach in Jamaica.  It was definitely not your traditional pre-wedding prep, but it was so me.  I also had a very lean muscley arm in the photos of my embrace with the hubby on our first kiss.  My arms are my thing I guess, which is nice that I feel like I don’t need to consistently work that one body part out.

I guess everyone told me 30 was the age they remember feeling like their body changed and it wasn’t all french fries and 5k’s anymore with no weight gain.  I definitely have noticed over the past year that I can easily put on anywhere from 5-10lbs in a few weeks before I even realize it.  And it def. is a bigger struggle to take it back off.

I’ve been loving hot yoga for an extra sweaty workout that is always a challenge no matter how in shape  I am.  the class i have been going to is a fusion class so it blends various styles of yoga so it is never the same workout which I love.

Sarah and I are doing the ROC Race at Gillette Stadium in August, which I am also super excited about.  Looks like it will be a blast and totally fun time.  Think wipe out with a 5k mixed in!

Thats all for now… hopefully I will write more often!

Oh also I got a Fitbit, so if you have one message me and we can follow each other!

Bringing Sexy Back…

Posted: August 15, 2013 by JVK in JVK

Well at least that is the goal… after skipping the JT song on my playlist this AM, I thought I should post something about my new goals.

I’m going to put a better effort into being strong and training my brain as well as my body for the next few months.  I want to bring sexy back to this bod by the time I turn the ripe wonderful age of 30 at the end of October.  I’m hoping to be able to post some before and after pics of my results of 70-ish days of positive thinking, eating, and doing.  If you don’t see the pics until December, then they were still a work in progress.

I’m lumpier today that I was freshman and sophomore year of college.  The 1 hr of hard core gym time a day just isn’t cutting it for me anymore when I sit for about 85% of the  remaining waking hours in my day.  I’m going to try to journal through the last few months in my twenties as well.  I feel like I’m at a limbo stage in my life where everything is just on the brink of change one way or another.  I will try to share more as I continue this self-proclaimed whole body wellness journey that I am jumping wholeheartedly into.

2 posts in a row! tic tac toe!

Ok that is not tic tac toe, but it rhymed… anywaayyys….

This morning I had fully intended to take a pic to blog about my new breakfast of choice but I drank it too fast so I will try to do that tomorrow.  Instead you get my favorite lunch…

Yumm…

Spinach, Tomatoe, Avocado, Cucumbers, Almond slivers, and blue cheese, or gorgonzola, I forget.

This morning I had a pretty tough workout at the gym.  I ran 1.5 miles for a warm up at a gradually accelerating pace.  Got it up to 6.5 min miles!  BAM!  Then I I hijacked a trainers workout that they had made for someone else and that they had posted on the wall.  It was an alternating TRX/kettlebell doozy.  I know my legs are gonna be hurting tomorrow from all the kettlebells swings.  I did three circuits of 6 different excersises and in between I did 100 jumping jacks.  After the 3rd round I did 200 jumping jacks.

Jumping jacks are a full body workout, I think even my intestines were mad at me… TMI.  It felt good to end those jacks gasping for breath and my legs were jellyish.  If you want a good quick workout do a few 100 rep sets of jacks… trust me you won’t regret it and you will see how I felt. They were slow ones either I tried to jump as fast as I could.

Till tomorrow…

SOOOOOO much has happened this past year!  I finally ran a full marathon, I got engaged to my best friend and a great running buddy during a half marathon about a month after that, and now i’m all signed up to repeat the full marathon that I did last year.

I never posted about my marathon experience but i can say that the training and preparation, which i thought would suck, was not bad at all.  Luckily I had an enthusiastic partner in crime that is soon to be my sister in law’ sister (you do the relation math there) that joined me for the ride.  I do have to say that if I didn’t have to meet Erica at the dunkin donuts between our houses at 6am all those saturday mornings last summer, i probably would have bailed on the marathon again.  We trained together on Thursdays with an 8mile tempo run after work along the river by my house, and met up for Saturday morning long slow distances on a flattish neighborhood between our houses.  She repeatedly got texts from people that saw us running and said we looked great, so that was encouraging.  (i have no friends in the suburbs so I got no texts haha) She developed planter fasciitis which definitely made it tough for her, but she was a champ.  By the time we ran our 22 mile training run I knew we would be just fine for the marathon.  We were greeted with marathon morning of 40 degrees and rain.  Looking back on it only one of our training runs had even a drizzle.  Are bodies probably would have dealt better with the 90 degrees and humidity that they were used to.  So that being said I am doing the same marathon this year, solo training effort this time, unless my fiance decides to bite the bullet.  I hope to break the 4 hour mark!

Since the marathon, when i weighed in at about 125lbs I packed on some winter weight and am closing in on 140lbs, not such a good number for my 5’4″ body.  I wish all my excess weight from pizza and chips would go to my boobs, but alas it lands on my midsection and gives em the dreaded love handles and muffin top that just don’t go so well with a bikini.

I have been hitting the gym pretty regularly again, but I set a goal to myself to try my best to run at least 1 mile a day even on my rest days So that I wouldn’t got three days with slacking off.  I also decided to give up chips for the rest of the summer.  A true test to my willpower.  Nothing is better than chips and dip for me.  So here goes another body experiment and running test.  I’m following the same plan i used for last year which starts next Saturday but I am going to actually do the Wednesday runs that are optional and the cross training that is prescribed.  After all I need to fit into a body hugging wedding dress on the beach in Jamaica in less than 9 months!!!

I am tracking all of my food and workouts on a iphone app called “lose it” i have been measuring out my portions of nuts and keeping tabs on the size of chicken breast i have been eating as to not cheat on the calorie counts.  I took some before pictures and home to post great after pictures in 9 months at my wedding in my thong string bikini  (jk about the thong)

Our intellectual convo today:

me:  Discovery,
petite carrots are better than baby carrots
I dunno why
maybe cuz they are more the thickness of frenchfries
haha
Sarah:  have you heard about baby carrots?!?!
 me:  what?
what about them
what?
the suspense is killing me
Sarah:  well i just looked up what i was about to tell you to make sure it was true
and i think it’s an urban legend
but todd told me that they were soaked in chlorine
but apparently they just use a little, which is like what’s in tap water
so nevermind
 me:  hahaha
to kill the dirt prob cuz carrots are grown in the ground
And we shall blog more, because of how funny we are and how much we miss being gym buddies! Our blogs will hold us accountable, starting….. NOW!

Post Marathon blues

Posted: October 30, 2012 by JVK in Uncategorized

I fully intend to write a long post about my marathon experience and overarching thoughts on the whole 4 month training process and the end results, but alas that is not this post.  Just want to inform our few followers that I am alive, I did finish the marathon and I am continuing posting, although i have been very infrequent recently.  Here is a pic of me at the finish

My Avocado Revelation

California avocados are so big that every time I am going to eat one I think “This must be what an ostrich egg is like.” So today I pretended I had an ostrich egg with my lunch and held if very gently while walking back to my desk.  Then I felt like the episode of Seinfeld where the guy cradles the mango in jury duty, so I immediately stopped.  This is my daily relationship with food! yes I am going crazy

So I keep seeing the commercial with Ryan Hall goes out on a run and brings his phone and listens to The Odyssey on the kindle app or whatever it is.  If you haven’t seen it I put the link to it in you tube.

Needless to say that’s the way I felt about my 19.2 mile run last Friday morning.  It was a 2 hour and 55 minute journey of highs and lows and laughs and chills and thoughts.  No tears which was good.  It started out at 6:30 am and it was drizzling with severe thunderstorms in the forecast.  I was nervous but ready for the task at hand.  It was my first long run I was going to be doing myself, without my marathon training buddy, Erica.

I planned out my route the night before and decided on a loop around my neighborhood which is about 6 miles followed by a run along the river extending my usual thursday night 8.5 mile run into 12+ miles.  In a previous 16 mile run with Erica we started with 6 miles and then took a much-needed bathroom break then finished the with the rest fo the 10 without a hitch, so I thought this planned seemed good.

Well the first 6 miles are very rolling hills so that started my out in a bit of a funk and it drizzled the whole time.  I was also nervous about running outside by myself for 3 hours so I kept thinking that everyone that passed me was a kidnapper or serial killer.  Especially the grown man who drove past me on a full on tricycle.  It was weird to say the least.   I got back to my house and ate my Larabar , and went to the bathroom and then grabbed my Nike handheld water bottle and got on the road again.  I thought about just doing two more loops of what I just did so I could pass the house again if I needed to but decided to stick with the plans and cuz heading out and back for 12 would be better and be more motivation for me not to stop.

Product plug here, I love my Nike handheld water bottle  .  I really think it’s the only way I could carry water.  You don’t really have to grip the bottle cuz you can adjust the strap that goes around your hand to make it tight enough to fit without falling off.  The only complaint I have is that on hot days the water gets warm.  But that would happen with any bottle I assume.  It’s nice cuz it has a little pouch you can put keys or snacks in too.  I put my almond butter in it, but more about that later.

So my run was going as planned.  I ende dup out about 5.5 miles before I got to unfamiliar territory and decided to head back towards the house.  I figured I would tally up to about 16 miles by the time I was back by the house then could run a  quick 3-4 mile loop around the neighborhood.  The out and back that I do is along a main road so I was much less nervous about people attacking me and no one seeing.  And there was many more people to look at which helps pass the time.

As I mentioned I have been experimenting with fuel and Paleo/gluten-free alternatives to traditional gu and carbo rich quick energy supplements.  I hate Gu to begin with and it wrecks my stomach.  I read a blog somewhere that recommended packets of peanut butter and upon a trip at whole foods I found these individual packets of Justin’s Almond Butter

I can only imagine what I looked like eating this.  I had put it in the zipper pocket of my water bottle before I went out for the run this morning so I would not forget it when I grabbed my water bottle.  So it had apparently hardened a bit.  And somehow ever after 8-9 mile outside running it was still slightly thicker than usual.  And it being chocolate flavored, it was dark brown.  I prob looking like a sweaty disgusting mess eating poop.  I know it was all over my face.   Cars were probably passing thinking “hey that girls eating poo!”  haha but seriously soooo tasty, and didn’t hurt my stomach at all, and brought me back to life after I have 14ish miles under my belt.  I just bought 6 more packets last night at Whole Foods.  Erica will think I’m nuts when I bust one out this saturday.

So the end of my run, aka the last two miles were brutal.  I had gotten the chills at this point I assume just from running for so long and the craziness of it all, so my legs felt very jello-y.  The didn’t hurt which was good but they didn’t feel right either, and I kept thinking if my legs buckle underneath me and I eat pavement I will be mortified.  I had to take some walk breaks at this point because I was kind of concerned but overall still felt 80% great.  I desperately needed some water with about 1.5 miles to go and like a mirage in the desert I cam off the high school property and saw a house with an irrigation sprinkler that was on.  Yes, I filled my water bottle about halfway with water from that sprinkler.  It was exactly what I needed to get me back home.

When I got home I was in complete aww of what I just did.  I didn’t honestly think I would be able to run 19 miles all on my own.  Having that other person there to hold yourself accountable really does help more than you know.  But I did it and I really felt great.  nothing hurt too bad at the end.  I did get two blisters on both of my heels, I think my socks kept sliding down.  I am really thinking about getting  tall compression socks, like these Pro Compression Marathon socks.  But I’m not sure I could stand the idea of running with full on knee socks, but I would like to try.  That would definitely stop the heel blisters.

All in all it was quite the successful Friday and I am looking forward to just a mere 16 this weekend hahaha.  I will keep this updated more on the progress of my training.

Tough Mudder!!! Better late than never

Well, what can I say.  Yes, this is a little late, but I wanted to write about it still.

The few obstacle change ups aside, Tough Mudder  really was a completely different race this year.  Instead of 40 degrees with below freezing water temps, we were in 90+ degrees and humidity.  It was a challange to say the least, but we had a hueg group doign it this year and rented a cabin up at the mountain so were able toenjoy it more.  I definitly would do a repeat of the event in warmer weather again.  And to this day I am still very afraid of cold water since the cold weathe Tough Mudder.

My only complaint was the wait towards the end of the race for the obstacles.  The Berlin walls and the Quarter Pipe easily had a combine hour long wait.  And at the pioint in the race you just want it to be over.  I ran with a buddy from college that does Cross Fit.  At the beginning I thought I was slowing him down, but his energy faded faster than mine, and my endurance training, with the marathon, definitily paid off.  At the end of the race it was me pushing him to finish.

It felt good to finish and drink the first beer I have had in months a Dos Equis, if you may ask.  Then we alll celebrated back at the house with recounts of our day and some much needed hot tub relief.

The electric shocks were way worse this year, and there were three obstacles with electroccussion.  The dnagling wire one at the end was the worst and the wires were spaced so close together there was really no avoiding it.  It knocked my friend completely to the ground.

posting slacker…

Posted: July 25, 2012 by JVK in Uncategorized

I have totally been slacking with my posting.  I owe pics and video from Tough Mudder and from wakeboarding.  I have been really enjoying my marathon training.  It has been going well, and having a running buddy is helping.  We got out at 5am last Saturday and did the longest run I have ever ran, 16 miles.  It was great, it ended up taking us roughly 2 hr 20 min and the average pace was 8:50 so I was pretty happy with that, especially since we were both so nervous about it.  This weekend I am headed up to Maine for some white water rafting.  I took the day off friday  and will be running 20 miles on my own, so i am very nervous about that, but I have a good route planned, so fingers crossed all goes well.

I caught a cold this week but went to a Minute Clinic yesterday, which I must say is AWESOME, and I  am already feeling better.  Just pumping the Vitamin C and trying to get some extra sleep this week to kick this cold.

The marathon journey has been very interesting, I am happy that I am down to 134lbs from my start of 142lbs.  I would like to be 120-125 by race day, and with all the long runs ahead of us I think I will have no problem.  My body completely rejects alcohol right now, beer and wine are out for sure.  I thought wine would be ok, but the amount of sugar in it screws up my head and leaves me awake at 3:30am with the night sweats and a pounding headaches.  Jay says its cuz my body is craving good food and drinks and see’s it as toxic because I am working out so much.  I think I am going to bring a small bottle of vodka and soda water for this weekend and just keep it to a minimum.  I don’t want to be sick when we’re careening down the rapids.

Workout:

warmup 0.5 miles on the treadmill ( I really just did this to make sure my Nike+ was calibrated and to sweat a little before some legs training)

  • 50 sumo squats with one leg up on a 1.5 foot box (another good burn)
  • 30 calf raises on box
  • 80 mountain climbers on exercise ball
  • 2-3 wall walks
  • 40 russian twists w/ 10lb plate
  • 20 side dips w/ 10lb plate
  • 30 sec plank on exercise ball
